6 Things to Consider When Building Your Dream Home

There are so many things to consider when you’re building your dream home that it’s easy to get overwhelmed and confused. It’s important to take a deep breath, calm down, and don’t overlook the little things when you are writing out your plans.

From choosing the right windows for the house to how many bedrooms you need, building a house can be exciting and not as overwhelming as you might think.

1. Do Your Homework

Building your dream house is something you don’t want to rush into. Study the plans for your home carefully before calling in any kind of contractor. You’ll want a general contractor who will make sure everything is done right and the people you need are hired. You won’t have to pull out your phone and search “drywall contractors near me” online.

The general contractor will also help keep you on track so you make all of the important decisions you need to for the home.

2. Switches and Electrical Outlets

The first thing you want to do is take note of where the switches and electrical outlets will be in your new home. Think ahead. Think of where you want the outlets to be for your Christmas tree, the fish tank, and the wall-mounted flat-screen TV that you can’t wait to purchase.

Do you want an outside outlet for Christmas lights? These are things that you need to consider now, while you have the plans in your hand, not after the house is complete and you need them and don’t have them. Make sure that you talk to your builder to see what the codes and laws are in your area as well for how many electrical outlets are needed in a home.

3. Make that Hallway Wide

Making sure your hallways are wide enough will save you a lot of aggravation later. The last thing you want is to have to turn sideways to pass one another in your own hall. Or have trouble getting down the halls in a wheelchair if someone in your household is disabled. Check with your contractor and the plans to make sure the hallways are as wide as you need them to be.

Hallways can be as wide as 5 feet, it’s not common, but it’s possible. Just keep in mind that adding more square feet to the hall will take away footage from other areas as well, so don’t go overboard.

4. Outside Outlets and Faucets

So many homeowners bemoan the fact that they have no outside outlets and forgot to put in outside faucets as well. Discuss the options for these things with your builder before the house gets underway.  That way you have as many outside outlets and faucets as you need to be comfortable doing things on the property.

5. Plenty of Storage Space

Everyone knows that you can never have enough storage space in a home. Check the number of cupboards and closets.

Are you going to have enough cabinets in the kitchen? Is the pantry going to be big enough? Will the kids need builtin storage for their toys? How about storage space in the laundry room?

These are questions that you want to ask and answer before the house is built, so you don’t have to remodel and add it later on.

6. Your Peace of Mind

One of the main things you should consider when building your dream home is your own peace of mind. You won’t find that in the plans for the house, but you will find it in making sure everything is done right and the things above are what you want.

These are just a few things to consider when building your dream home. Take your time, do your research, and choose wisely, because this may very well be the home you spend the rest of your life in.
